GraDuatioN BuZZZZ WoRdS

Bam! My mind was rewinding my daughter’s recent graduation while listening to Coldplay’s “Adventure of a Lifetime”. My foot hit a stump and I was in flight. My palms skidded on the running path and my knee followed. I pulled myself up, my knee and hands stinging. I kept going.

This morning’s run became sort of a metaphor for my daughter’s new course in life. I wondered if she takes a fall, will she lie there waiting for someone to help her, or pull herself up? And when she does stand again, will she continue down the same path that just slammed her, or turn around and take a different trail?

I also thought about the people I passed. Some looked straight ahead or at the ground–avoiding the eye-greet, some gave a brief wave or nod, and some gave me a very warm smile. These were a few of the personalities she will meet in life and then learn how to be herself among them, and not compromise who she is. There were even a couple of them that voiced a “hi”. Maneuvering through life is difficult enough, and then you throw people into the mix. Why can’t they all be warm, furry puppies?

As far as those wise words to someone graduating, there are a million and three. And when it’s your daughter and they are coming from you—well it’s like speaking alien talk. Words traveling directly from your heart, cruise by like an annoying fly and seem meaningless.

Although if she happened to catch a few of my words, she would have heard that above everything else, take advice from your gut…it’s usually soft-spoken, so sometimes its difficult to hear, but it genuinely is guiding you in the right direction. Also, you can never over indulge with humor…take extra helpings. And back to Coldplay…”turn your magic on” –life is your adventure.

Enjoy the ride! <3
